Narrative Approaches

Narrative approaches are based on the idea that we understand our lives through the stories we tell about ourselves --- stories shaped by our experiences, relationships, culture, and beliefs.  Sometimes these stories support us, and sometimes they limit us.  Narrative therapy helps you gently question and re-author these stories so you can move towards a more compassionate and empowering understanding of who you are.

rather than seeing "the problem" as something inside you, narrative therapy invites you to view the problem as separate from you.  This creates space for new possibilities, alternative perspectives, and a more flexible sense of identity.  You are not the problem --- the problem is the problem.

In our work together, a narrative approach may include exploring:

  • the stories that have shaped your belief about yourself

  • the influence of family, culture, and past experiences

  • the unspoken rules or expectations you have internalised

  • the strengths, values, and abilities that have supported you

  • alternative stories that feel truer, kinder, or more hopeful

Narrative therapy is collaborative and respectful.  it does not impose a "right" story onto your life; instead, it encourages curiosity, self--reflection, and the development of narratives that help you move forward with greater clarity and confidence.

This approach can be particularly helpful when working with identity, grief, trauma, low self--esteem, relational challenges, and times of transition.
